📞 We Are Here to Help!
Planning a trip to Peru is exciting, and we want to make it perfect for you. If you have questions about itineraries, hotel upgrades, or traveling with a group, please reach out.
🎒 The Essential Packing List: 2 Days at Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu
Pack Light, Pack Smart, Climb High.
Preparing for Huayna Picchu requires a little extra strategy. The weather in the cloud forest changes rapidly, and the trail is steep. Here is your checklist to ensure you are safe, comfortable, and ready for the perfect photo.
📄 The Non-Negotiables
Original Passport: You absolutely cannot enter the park or the train without it. Ensure it is the same ID you used to book your tour!
Tickets: Keep your train and entrance tickets accessible (we recommend having both digital and printed copies just in case).
Cash (Soles): While many places take cards, small local shops, restrooms, and tips often require cash. Small bills in Peruvian Soles are best.
👕 Clothing & Footwear
Sturdy Hiking Shoes: This is crucial for Huayna Picchu. The stairs are steep, narrow, and can be slippery. You need shoes with excellent grip/traction (worn-in hiking boots or trail runners are best).
Layered Clothing: The morning starts cold, the hike gets hot, and the summit can be windy. Wear breathable layers you can easily peel off.
Waterproof Jacket/Poncho: Rain showers can happen anytime in the cloud forest. A lightweight poncho is a lifesaver.
🎒 Gear & Hydration
Small Daypack (20-25L): Large bags are not allowed inside Machu Picchu. You need a small, comfortable backpack to keep your hands free for the cables on the Huayna Picchu climb.
Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated!
> Important Note: Single-use plastic bottles are generally restricted within the park. Please bring a refillable canteen.
Camera & Memory Cards: You will want plenty of storage space for the summit views.
Energy Snacks: The climb burns calories. Pack light nourishment like energy bars, nuts, or chocolate.
🧴 Health & Protection
Sun Protection: The high-altitude sun is strong. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat that stays on your head (it gets windy up top!).
Insect Repellent: Machu Picchu is located in the brow of the jungle; biting sandflies can be present, especially in the afternoon.
💡 Pro Tip: Pack efficiently! We recommend leaving your large luggage at your hotel in Cusco or Ollantaytambo and traveling to Aguas Calientes with only your daypack and essential overnight items.

Frequently Asked Questions
You Asked, We Answered.
Got a question about your upcoming adventure? We have gathered the most common inquiries from our travelers to help you prepare. If you don’t see your question here, just reach out!
🏔️ About the Hike & Experience
Q: Is the hike up Huayna Picchu really that difficult?
A: It is challenging, but manageable for most active travelers! The trail is steep, narrow, and involves many stone steps (sometimes referred to as «vertical hiking»). If you have a moderate fitness level and do not suffer from severe vertigo (fear of heights), you will find it to be a thrilling and rewarding climb. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top.
Q: How far in advance do I need to book?
A: As soon as possible! Permits for Huayna Picchu are extremely limited (only a few hundred per day) and sell out months in advance. To guarantee your spot, we recommend booking at least 2 to 3 months prior to your trip, especially during the dry season (May–September).
Q: What is the difference between Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu?
A: Great question! Huayna Picchu is the iconic, jagged peak you see in the background of classic photos; it is steeper, shorter, and has Inca ruins on top. Machu Picchu Mountain is on the opposite side; it is a longer, wider, and less steep hike, offering a higher panoramic view but no ruins on the trail.
🎒 Logistics & Preparation
Q: Do I really need my original passport? A: Yes, absolutely. You cannot board the train or enter the Machu Picchu park with a copy or a photo. You must present your physical, original passport that matches the number you used to book.
Q: Can I bring my luggage on the train? A: No, space is limited on the trains. You are allowed one backpack/daypack (approx. 5kg/11lbs). We recommend leaving your large suitcases in storage at your hotel in Cusco or at our office (for free!) and packing just what you need for the overnight stay.
Q: Will I get altitude sickness (Soroche)?
A: Actually, Machu Picchu (2,430m) is significantly lower than Cusco (3,400m), so many people feel better once they arrive there! However, altitude affects everyone differently. We recommend spending at least 2 days acclimating in Cusco before starting the tour, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding heavy meals.
🌦️ Weather & Facilities
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: The tour goes on! The cloud forest weather is unpredictable. Rain can create a mystical atmosphere over the ruins. We recommend bringing a high-quality waterproof poncho. Note: If safety is compromised due to extreme weather, guides may alter the route, but this is rare.
Q: Are there bathrooms inside Machu Picchu?
A: No. There are no toilets inside the archaeological site. You must use the restrooms located outside the main entrance gate (cost: 2 Soles) before you enter. Once you are inside, you cannot leave to use the bathroom and re-enter.
Q: I am a solo traveler. Can I join this tour?
A: Absolutely! Our small group tours are a fantastic way to meet fellow adventurers from around the world. If you require a private hotel room, a single supplement fee will apply; otherwise, you will have a great time connecting with the group.
