We want you to have the best experience possible! To ensure this adventure matches your expectations, here are the finer details about the Huayna Picchu addition.

Two Days of History, Nature, and Adventure.

This isn’t just a sightseeing trip; it is an immersion into the heart of the Inca Empire. Here is the vibe, the flow, and the reality of your 2-Day Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu adventure.

🌿 Day 1: The Scenic Build-Up

The first day is all about anticipation and breathtaking landscapes.

  • A Feast for the Eyes: Expect a relaxed but visually stunning journey through the Sacred Valley. You will see agricultural terraces, snow-capped peaks, and roaring rivers.

  • The Train Ride: This is a highlight for many! Relax in comfortable seats with large windows as the vegetation changes from the high Andes to the lush, green cloud forest.

  • The Base Camp: You will arrive in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), a bustling little town nestled in a deep valley. Expect a humid, jungle-like atmosphere. You’ll have a comfortable night in a hotel, giving you the chance to rest and acclimate before the big day.

⛰️ Day 2: The Climb & The Citadel

This is the day you have been waiting for. It starts early and is packed with activity.

  • An Early Start: To make the most of the day and catch the morning light over the ruins, we wake up early! The bus ride up the zigzagging road to the entrance takes about 30 minutes.

  • The Huayna Picchu Challenge: This isn’t a casual walk—it’s a true adventure. Expect a steep, vertical climb on original Inca stairs. It gets the heart pumping!

    • The Reward: The view from the top is unlike anything else. You will see Machu Picchu from above, surrounded by mountains and the Urubamba River coiling around the base like a snake.

  • Guided History: Inside the main citadel, your guide won’t just point at rocks; they will explain the how and why of Inca engineering, bringing the stone city to life.

🥾 The Physical Reality

  • Lots of Steps: Machu Picchu is a city of stairs. Between the citadel tour and the Huayna Picchu hike, you will be walking up and down uneven stone steps for several hours. Comfortable, broken-in shoes are your best friend here.

  • Altitude & Breath: While lower than Cusco, the air is still thin. Take your time, walk at your own pace, and drink plenty of water. We are in no rush!

We typically book our guests at the Hostel Qoya Palace, a reputable 3-star hotel located right in the heart of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo).

👥 Small Groups, Better Experiences

We intentionally limit our group sizes to a maximum of 8 to 10 travelers.

You Asked, We Answered.

Got a question about your upcoming adventure? We have gathered the most common inquiries from our travelers to help you prepare. If you don’t see your question here, just reach out!

🏔️ About the Hike & Experience

Q: Is the hike up Huayna Picchu really that difficult?

A: It is challenging, but manageable for most active travelers! The trail is steep, narrow, and involves many stone steps (sometimes referred to as «vertical hiking»). If you have a moderate fitness level and do not suffer from severe vertigo (fear of heights), you will find it to be a thrilling and rewarding climb. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top.

Q: How far in advance do I need to book?

A: As soon as possible! Permits for Huayna Picchu are extremely limited (only a few hundred per day) and sell out months in advance. To guarantee your spot, we recommend booking at least 2 to 3 months prior to your trip, especially during the dry season (May–September).

Q: What is the difference between Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu?

A: Great question! Huayna Picchu is the iconic, jagged peak you see in the background of classic photos; it is steeper, shorter, and has Inca ruins on top. Machu Picchu Mountain is on the opposite side; it is a longer, wider, and less steep hike, offering a higher panoramic view but no ruins on the trail.

🎒 Logistics & Preparation

Q: Do I really need my original passport? A: Yes, absolutely. You cannot board the train or enter the Machu Picchu park with a copy or a photo. You must present your physical, original passport that matches the number you used to book.

Q: Can I bring my luggage on the train? A: No, space is limited on the trains. You are allowed one backpack/daypack (approx. 5kg/11lbs). We recommend leaving your large suitcases in storage at your hotel in Cusco or at our office (for free!) and packing just what you need for the overnight stay.

Q: Will I get altitude sickness (Soroche)?

A: Actually, Machu Picchu (2,430m) is significantly lower than Cusco (3,400m), so many people feel better once they arrive there! However, altitude affects everyone differently. We recommend spending at least 2 days acclimating in Cusco before starting the tour, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding heavy meals.

🌦️ Weather & Facilities

Q: What happens if it rains?

A: The tour goes on! The cloud forest weather is unpredictable. Rain can create a mystical atmosphere over the ruins. We recommend bringing a high-quality waterproof poncho. Note: If safety is compromised due to extreme weather, guides may alter the route, but this is rare.

Q: Are there bathrooms inside Machu Picchu?

A: No. There are no toilets inside the archaeological site. You must use the restrooms located outside the main entrance gate (cost: 2 Soles) before you enter. Once you are inside, you cannot leave to use the bathroom and re-enter.

Q: I am a solo traveler. Can I join this tour?

A: Absolutely! Our small group tours are a fantastic way to meet fellow adventurers from around the world. If you require a private hotel room, a single supplement fee will apply; otherwise, you will have a great time connecting with the group.
