Detailed trip Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Cusco:
Your 6-day Cusco Adventure Trip begins upon your arrival at Cusco Airport. Please provide us with your flight details so that we can meet you at the airport and transfer you to your reserved hotel. Today, there are no planned activities, allowing you to relax and acclimatize. It is important to accept the coca tea offered at the hotel, as it helps with adjusting to the altitude. Cusco is located at 3,400 meters above sea level.
Day 2: Sacred Valley of the Incas: Cusco – Pisac – Urubamba – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes:
We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 7:30 AM for a guided Sacred Valley Tour in our private bus. Shortly after departing Cusco, we’ll pass Saqsaywaman, the site of the Inti Raymi festival every June 24th. Our route leads to the San Miguel Pass, then descends into the Sacred Valley. We’ll visit traditional markets in Ccorao and Pisac. After exploring the Pisac Market, we’ll take a bus to the mountain’s Inca ruins for a one-hour guided tour of terraces, temples, and the Intihuatana. Then, we’ll head by bus to Urubamba for lunch at a local restaurant.
After savoring a delightful lunch, our journey takes us to Ollantaytambo, a site that captivates with possibly the most stunning Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley. Enveloped by majestic sacred mountains, it’s a scene right out of a traveler’s dream. Imagine spending an hour and a half exploring this incredible archaeological site, where the Temple of the Sun boasts massive, intricately carved stone blocks, mesmerizing water fountains, and magnificent stairways and terraces.
From Ollantaytambo, you’ll enjoy a brief, scenic 15-minute ride to the train station. There, you’ll board a train for a memorable two-hour journey to Aguas Calientes, where your comfortable hotel accommodation eagerly awaits. Did you know that Aguas Calientes, a vibrant tourist town just 20 minutes from the iconic Machu Picchu, offers a variety of charming restaurants and facilities? It’s the perfect prelude to our grand adventure to the legendary Lost City of the Incas.
Recommendations:
- We strongly recommend wearing suitable footwear, as you will be climbing stairs with many steps.
- Bring a small backpack, camera, sunhat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a water bottle.
- In Pisac, be sure to try the delicious «empanadas» and purchase a handcrafted souvenir.
- In Urubamba, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch and don’t miss trying the corn of the Sacred Valley.
Day 3: Machu Picchu Tour: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco:
After a restful night in your hotel, enjoy breakfast and leave your personal items at the hotel reception. Accompanied by your guide, walk to the bus station (about 10 minutes). The bus ride to Machu Picchu takes half an hour. Upon arrival at this ancient sanctuary, open your arms and absorb the magic of this millennia-old site. Take in the breathtaking views of the Inca citadel—it’s a moment you will have eagerly anticipated. Our guide will then provide a 2- to 3-hour tour, sharing insights about the history and architecture of this extraordinary place.
After the guided tour, you are free to explore Machu Picchu at your own pace, taking photos and savoring the experience. Later, you will have time for lunch and to explore Aguas Calientes, with its selection of restaurants and craft shops. We will then board the train back to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Cusco.
Recommendations:
- Bring your identification document or passport.
- Arrive at the train station at least half an hour in advance.
- Travel light, as only 7 kg of luggage is allowed on the train.
- Why not pack a light backpack with essentials like your camera to capture unforgettable moments, a hat for shade, sunscreen to protect against the sun’s rays, mosquito repellent for those pesky insects, and a water bottle to stay hydrated on your adventure?
- Wear appropriate walking shoes, as you will climb many steps at Machu Picchu.
- After the tour, take a moment to absorb the magic and recharge your energy.
- Optionally, you can climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain—check availability in advance.
Day 4: City Tour:
Our transfer will meet you at your hotel at 7:30 AM to take you to the starting point of your tour. We begin by visiting Cusco Cathedral, located in the main square, renowned for its finely carved woodwork, impressive altars, and beautiful paintings crafted by local artists from the Cusqueña School, which discreetly incorporate elements of indigenous thought.
Next, we stroll through the historic center towards «Qoricancha» or the Temple of the Sun, an esteemed indigenous religious sanctuary. Here, you will appreciate the Incas’ exquisite stonework, noted for its precision that allows no gaps, even during earthquakes. After visiting Qoricancha, we board a bus to Sacsayhuaman, just 3 km from Cusco. This site offers panoramic views of the city and features massive limestone blocks weighing between 25 and 120 tons, arranged in a serpentine (zigzag) pattern over three terraces.
We then proceed to «Qenqo» (meaning labyrinth), located one kilometer from Sacsayhuaman. This site features limestone rock sculptures and structures believed by historians to have been used for astronomy, religious practices, and mummification.
Our next stop is «Puca Pucara,» which means «red fortress» in Quechua—a strategic location for monitoring access to the Imperial city of Cusco.
Finally, we visit «Tambomachay,» known for its water sources or «Inca Baths» and the constant flow of water, often referred to as the waters of eternal youth. This site is part of the Inca trail from Cusco to Machu Picchu. The tour lasts approximately 4.5 hours and concludes near the main square.
Recommendations:
- After the tour, wander through the Plaza de Armas and nearby areas to admire the craftsmanship of local artisan stores.
- Sample some traditional Peruvian cuisine at nearby restaurants or relax on the Plaza’s park benches and capture a photo amidst the warm afternoon temperatures, despite Cusco’s chilly nights.
- At night, enjoy the lively atmosphere around the square, where numerous bars and nightclubs offer entertainment with great music and drinks.
Day 5: Rainbow Mountain Tour:
Embark on a full-day tour to Vinincunca, or Rainbow Mountain, one of the Andes’ most stunning sights. We will pick you up from your Cusco hotel at 4:30 AM, and journey by car for two hours south to Cusipata (3,310 m.a.s.l.), where a buffet breakfast awaits. Post-breakfast, we drive for another hour to Llaqto, the trek’s start point. The 1.5-hour trek features a gradual incline, with the final half hour being steeper.
As we hike, you’ll witness the typical Andean landscape, complete with llamas and alpacas. Upon reaching the Vinincunca viewpoint (5,030 m.a.s.l.), your guide will explain the mountain’s orography, ecosystem, and vibrant colors. This is a prime opportunity for photos and to admire the stunning Vinincunca mountain range. We then return along the same trail to Llaqto, where our transport awaits to take us back to Cusipata for a buffet lunch. We aim to return to Cusco City between 4 and 5 PM.

ESSENTIAL PACKING FOR YOUR MACHU PICCHU ADVENTURE
Planning an unforgettable multi-day journey to Machu Picchu by train? Here’s what you should consider bringing along:
Most explorers find a small or medium-sized wheeled suitcase ideal for our private vehicles’ storage. Whatever you choose, remember you’ll be managing your own luggage at airports, navigating through hotels, and walking short distances. It’s best to travel light to make your adventure more enjoyable. Plus, a backpack is crucial for daily excursions and activities. Airlines generally allow up to 20kg for checked luggage, so plan accordingly.
Beyond your typical travel essentials, we’ve curated some specific packing tips to enhance your experience:
MUST-HAVES:
- Closed-toe shoes are vital for keeping your feet safe from cuts and scrapes while wandering through cities and natural landscapes. They’re also your first line of defense against rare bites or stings.
- Sun protection: Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses – your shield against the sun’s rays.
- Original passport: Ensure it’s kept safe and dry as you explore Machu Picchu.
- Extra cash in Soles: handy for picking up unique souvenirs.
- Camera: Capture the awe-inspiring vistas that you’ll encounter.
- Sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Sunglasses.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:
- Digital and/or printed copies of vital documents like your plane tickets, passport, and vaccination certificates. Keep duplicates separate from the originals. While copies aren’t substitutes, they make replacements easier if required.
- Reusable water bottle: We suggest at least 1.5 liters. Did you know buying bottled water adds to environmental issues globally? Producing a 1-liter plastic bottle uses up 2 liters of water and 200 ml of oil. Let’s minimize this footprint.
- Electrical adapter plug.
- Personal medical kit: Though your guide will have an extensive kit, it’s wise to pack items like mild painkillers, electrolytes, and band-aids.
- Fly spray.
- A clock or your phone to keep track of time spent in mesmerizing surroundings.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS:
- Earplugs: Handy if your roommate snores.
- Phrasebook.
HANDLING VALUABLES:
We advise against bringing excess valuables. Safeguard them in your hotel’s safe, and it’s wise to use a money belt or discreet pouch.
LAUNDRY TIPS:
Throughout your trip, laundry services are available in many hotels and cities, though a two-night hotel stay might be necessary to ensure timely service. Hotel services typically charge per item, whereas laundromats often charge per kilo – a budget-friendly option (around $2 per kilo).
Ready to embark on an experience of a lifetime? Your adventure awaits in the heart of Peru!
ESSENTIAL TRAVEL DETAILS
KEY NOTES FOR YOUR JOURNEY
- Ensure your name matches the one in your passport for Machu Picchu permits and train tickets. Alterations within 45 days of departure might lead to additional charges, including the cost of new tickets.
- Prefer a room to yourself? A single supplement is available for all nights, subject to availability. Reach out to our reservation expert for more details.
- When visiting the majestic Machu Picchu, note that tours follow a designated path. Once you start, you can’t re-enter if you leave, and personal exploration isn’t allowed afterward. Be sure to check the Itinerary for specifics.
- We begin securing Machu Picchu permits for you after receiving your deposit and passport information. SPT Travel & Tours handles this process for your convenience.
- Be aware that altitudes above 2,800 meters (9,200 feet) might affect your health. If you have any health concerns, please consult with your doctor.
- Most highland hotels offer oxygen facilities, but using it for more than 5-10 minutes might result in extra fees.
ARRIVING IN CUSCO
Your adventure begins in Cusco! On arrival, we’ll greet you at the airport and whisk you away in a private vehicle to your reserved hotel. Please provide us with your flight details at least 10 days before your travel. Look out for our representative holding a Blue SPT Travel & Tours sign when you arrive.
TOUR BRIEFING
This will happen upon your hotel arrival. Spend around 30 minutes with your guide reviewing the enchanting details of your upcoming tour.
LUGGAGE STORAGE OPTIONS
Concerned about your luggage during the excursion? Rest easy! Your main luggage can be securely stored at our office or your hotel, free of charge. Be sure to carry a small backpack with essentials like water and a jacket for your day’s adventure.
FINAL PAYMENTS
You’ll settle the remaining balance during the briefing session. To avoid high credit card fees in Peru, we accept cash payments at our office in US dollars or Peruvian soles. There are plenty of ATMs in the historic center. If you prefer, pay online via VISA or PAYPAL, but note a 7% service charge applies. To use PAYPAL, just log in to your account and send payment to sunrisetrek@gmail.com.
STUDENT DISCOUNTS
Interested in a student discount? Peruvian law requires you to be under 18 at the time of your trek to Machu Picchu, though students over 18 will need a college ID. If you book a trek at 17 but turn 18 before your visit, a valid college ID is necessary to claim the discount. College students must provide a copy of their ID showing their photo, college name, and card expiration date for the current academic year.
- Students aged 11 to 17 enjoy a $30 discount.
- Children aged 2 to 11 receive a $40 reduction.
- Remember, all students must send a passport copy when booking to qualify. Email us at saleso@sunriseperutrek.com.
CHANGING DEPARTURE DATES
Can departure dates be altered after ticket purchase? Sadly, no. Once tickets are bought, the government restricts any changes. Thus, modifying departure dates post-purchase isn’t possible. Additionally, tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. Deposits are also non-refundable if you cancel your Cusco to Machu Picchu tour.
ORIGINAL PASSPORT NECESSITY
Bringing your original passport is crucial! It must be the same as the one used for reserving your Machu Picchu entry, train, and other tickets. If you’re renewing your passport or changing names, send the previous passport details to secure your booking, and we can update it for a $25 fee. We’ll need copies of both the old and new passports. Without paying this fee, bring both passports to Peru. Enter Peru with your new passport, but you’ll need both for Machu Picchu and train access. Without them, entry won’t be possible.
PERU VISA REQUIREMENTS
Travelers from Australia, the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and South Africa currently don’t need a visa for Peru. If you’re from another country, please verify visa or entry requirements at your nearest Peruvian consulate.
ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Traveling above 2,500m can lead to altitude sickness, potentially life-threatening even for the fit. Higher risks exist if you’ve experienced altitude sickness before, exercise, or drink alcohol pre-acclimatization, or have breathing-related health issues. Consult with your doctor and ensure your insurance covers emergency evacuation and related medical expenses.
MEDICAL ARRANGEMENTS
Be aware, medical care can be costly and isn’t always high quality in all areas. Make sure you have solid travel medical insurance and funds ready for medical treatments abroad or for repatriation.
Parts of your journey rise above 2,800 meters (9,200 feet), where altitude may impact travelers regardless of age, fitness, or gender.
Before Departure:
Certain health conditions worsen significantly at high altitudes and could face complex treatment challenges. Engaging in a detailed discussion with your physician about pre-existing conditions is essential. Some medications might aid altitude adjustment; consult your doctor about these options.
During Your Travel:
Our guides have basic first-aid training and know local medical centers, but understanding altitude travel impacts is crucial for monitoring your health and seeking help promptly.
UNSOURCED MEALS
Budget around $25-$50 daily for meals on your adventure. Curious how you can plan for this?
- Breakfast: If not included, local coffee shops charge about $5-$10.
- Lunch: Quick snacks or set menus at local spots can total $5-$10, whereas tourist restaurant lunches might range from $10-$15.
- Dinner: We recommend trusted local restaurants to sample regional delicacies, usually costing $12-$25 per entree. Prices are indicative. Opt for local dishes if on a tight budget, but be cautious of potential stomach upsets for cost savings. For gourmet experiences, expect prices akin to Western countries.
GRATUITIES
Feeling thrilled with our service? While tipping isn’t obligatory, it’s a meaningful gesture for those supporting your journey. It encourages outstanding service and is valued in many SPT Travel & Tours destinations. Ultimately, it’s your choice—let the spirit of service guide your decision, remembering it celebrates exceptional service received.
