Full Trek Itinerary
Day 1: The Path to the Sun Gate
Route: Cusco (or Ollantaytambo) ➔ Km 104 ➔ Wiñay Wayna ➔ Sun Gate ➔ Aguas Calientes
Your journey into the past begins before dawn. We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 AM and whisk you away to the train station in Ollantaytambo. (Pro Tip: Want to sleep in? We highly recommend spending the night before your trek in the charming town of Ollantaytambo to cut down on travel time!)
The Adventure Begins (Km 104) Enjoy a scenic train ride winding through the Sacred Valley until we reach Kilometer 104. This is where the rubber meets the road—or rather, where your boots meet the Inca Trail! We will cross the suspension bridge over the Urubamba River to visit the Chachabamba archeological site. Historically significant as the «Second Gateway» to Machu Picchu, this site offers the perfect introduction to the Incas’ fascination with nature and astronomy.
The Ascent to «Forever Young» Guided by our expert English-speaking guide, we begin a 3-hour gradual climb. The landscape transforms around you, shifting from dry scrub to lush cloud forest. Along the way, we pass a beautiful waterfall before arriving at Wiñay Wayna («Forever Young»). These spectacular terraced ruins are often considered the most beautiful on the trail, and you will receive a full guided tour here to uncover their secrets.
The Grand Reveal: The Sun Gate After a well-deserved lunch, we continue along the original stone path, hugging the mountainside with stunning views of the Urubamba Canyon below. Finally, we reach Inti Punku (The Sun Gate) at 2,750m.
This is the moment you have traveled for. As you step through the gate, the citadel of Machu Picchu reveals itself in the distance—a breathtaking reward for your effort. We will descend toward the ruins to catch the sunset light over the surrounding mountains before taking the bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes.
Evening Relaxation After checking into your hotel, the evening is yours. Enjoy a delicious dinner or soothe your muscles in the town’s famous natural hot springs, resting up for the big day tomorrow.

What to Bring: Your Packing Checklist
Since this is a short 2-day trek with a hotel stay, you can travel light! You will not need a heavy camping backpack. Just focus on the essentials for a comfortable hike and a night in Aguas Calientes.
🎒 The Essentials (Must-Haves)
Original Passport: You must bring the physical passport you used to book your tour. Photos or copies are not accepted at the checkpoint.
Valid Student Card (if applicable): If you booked with a student discount, you must present your valid original ID at the gate.
Small Daypack: A lightweight backpack (20–25 liters) to carry your water, snacks, and extra layers.
Water: Bring at least 1 liter of water for the start of the hike. (We recommend a reusable bottle to reduce plastic waste).
Money (Cash): Bring Peruvian Soles (or USD) in small denominations for tips, souvenirs, or snacks.
💡 Local Tip: ATMs and exchange houses in Aguas Calientes often have high fees or poor exchange rates. It is best to withdraw cash in Cusco before you leave.
👕 Clothing & Gear
Comfortable Hiking Boots: Make sure they are well broken-in before the trip to avoid blisters.
Rain Gear: A waterproof jacket or rain poncho is essential.
Note: While the rainy season is generally November to March, the cloud forest weather is unpredictable—it’s always best to be prepared!
Sun Protection: The high-altitude sun is strong!
Sun Hat: A cap or brimmed hat is essential.
Sunscreen: High SPF protection.
Sunglasses.
🧴 Toiletries & Health
Insect Repellent: High DEET content is recommended for the cloud forest.
Good to know: While mosquitoes are present, no cases of Malaria or Yellow Fever have been reported in this region.
Basic Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, and any personal medication.
Personal First Aid: Band-aids or moleskin for blisters are always a smart addition.
The 2-Day Inca Trail: All the Glory, Half the Grit
Experience the magic of the Sun Gate without the camping gear.
If you have ever dreamed of walking in the footsteps of the Incas but aren’t quite ready to commit to four days of camping in the wilderness, the 2-Day Short Inca Trail is your perfect match.
This trek is the «Goldilocks» of Andean adventures: it is challenging enough to feel like a true accomplishment, yet comfortable enough to end with a hot shower and a soft bed. It is the only way to experience the breathtaking arrival through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)—a privilege usually reserved for multi-day trekkers—while fitting perfectly into a tight schedule.
🌟 Why You Will Love This Trek
The «Sun Gate» Moment: You will hike directly into Machu Picchu via the ancient Inca entrance (Inti Punku) for that classic, sweeping view of the citadel—often with fewer crowds than in the morning.
No Camping Required: Trade the sleeping bag for crisp sheets. After your hike, you’ll descend to the town of Aguas Calientes for a relaxing night in a hotel.
Best of Both Worlds: You get the history, the ancient stone steps, and the cloud forest scenery, but in a compact, manageable timeframe.
History at Every Turn: Before you even reach Machu Picchu, you will explore Wiñay Wayna («Forever Young»), widely considered the most stunning Incan site on the entire trail system.
📅 The Journey at a Glance
Day 1: The Hike to History
The Start: We take a scenic train ride to Km 104, dropping us right at the edge of the cloud forest.
The Trek: We begin a steady climb past the Chachabamba ruins and up the ancient stone path. The hike covers roughly 12 km (7.5 miles) and takes about 6–7 hours.
The Climax: In the late afternoon, we cross through the Sun Gate. Seeing Machu Picchu reveal itself below you is a moment that will stay with you forever.
The Rest: We bus down to Aguas Calientes for a celebratory dinner and a restful sleep in a hotel.
Day 2: The Lost City Revealed
The Tour: Recharged and refreshed, we take the early bus back up to the citadel. Your guide will lead you through the temples, terraces, and secrets of Machu Picchu.
The Return: After soaking it all in, we return to Cusco by train in the afternoon/evening.
🎒 Essential «Need-to-Knows»
1. It is «Short,» but it is still a Hike Don’t let the name fool you! «Short» doesn’t mean «flat.» You will be hiking uphill for a few hours on original Inca stone steps. It is classified as Moderate. If you can hike for 4-5 hours at home, you can do this—just take your time!
2. Permits are Mandatory Just like the Classic 4-Day trek, this route requires a government permit. These are limited to 250 people per day and can sell out months in advance. Booking early isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a necessity.
3. You Carry Your Daypack Unlike the longer treks where porters carry the heavy gear, on the 2-Day trail, you are the captain of your own cargo. You will need a daypack (20-30L) for your water, snacks, rain jacket, and camera. (Your overnight bag for the hotel will be sent ahead by train!).
4. Acclimatization is Key Even though we start lower than Cusco, the altitude is real. We strongly recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before starting this trek to let your body adjust.

Additional Info About the 2-Day Inca Trail
The 2-Day Inca Trail offers an incredible blend of adventure and culture, perfect for those with limited time or seeking a less demanding trek. This shorter route still features ancient ruins, stunning views, and the iconic Sun Gate entrance to Machu Picchu. With professional guides, comfortable accommodations, and well-prepared meals, every detail is planned for a smooth and memorable experience.
What to Expect: The 2-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Walk the «Camino Real» without the Camping
The 2-Day Inca Trail—often called the «Short Inca Trail,» the «Sacred Inca Trail,» or historically, the «Camino Real de los Incas»—is the perfect bridge between adventure and comfort.
If you want the bragging rights of arriving at Machu Picchu on foot through the Sun Gate but lack the time or desire for the full 4-day expedition, this is your journey.
🗺️ The Route: Km 104 to the Sun Gate
Your adventure begins at Km 104 (Chachabamba), a stop along the railway from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. From here, we step off the train and onto history.
The Climb: The hike involves a steady, four-hour ascent to Wiñay Wayna («Forever Young»), a stunning archaeological site often considered beautiful enough to rival Machu Picchu itself.
The Arrival: From Wiñay Wayna, it is just a couple of hours further to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). This is the moment you have traveled for: your first glimpse of the Lost City spreading out below you.
👨👩👧👦 Who is this Trek For?
We designed this experience to be accessible and enjoyable. It is an ideal choice for:
Families & All Ages: Unlike the grueling 4-day trek, there is no age limit here. It is a fantastic alternative for families wanting to share a piece of history together.
Altitude-Sensitive Travelers: Because this route starts at a lower elevation and doesn’t reach the dizzying heights of «Dead Woman’s Pass,» it is perfect for those who worry about altitude difficulties.
Time-Crunched Explorers: If you don’t have the time or the physical conditioning for four days of rugged hiking, this itinerary lets you experience the best parts of the trail in a fraction of the time.
🏛️ A Step Back in Time: The Great Inca Road
When you walk this path, you are not just hiking a trail; you are connecting to a masterpiece of ancient engineering.
The Inca Trail was part of a massive road system known as the Qhapaq Ñan. This network didn’t just serve Peru; it spanned from Quito, Ecuador in the north, passing through Cusco, and ending deep in Tucuman, Argentina to the south.
This extraordinary web annexed modern-day Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina, crossing the soaring Andean ranges (peaking at over 5,000m/16,400ft) and running parallel to the coast. By hiking the «Short» trail, you are walking on the very same stones that once united a continent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have you got questions? We’ve got answers!
Planning a trip to Machu Picchu is a big deal, and we want you to feel 100% confident before you book. Here are the answers to the most common questions travelers ask us about the 2-Day Inca Trail.
1. Is the «Short» Inca Trail actually easy?
The honest answer: It is easier than the 4-day trek, but it is not a walk in the park! While you skip the high-altitude camping and «Dead Woman’s Pass,» you still have to hike about 12km (7.5 miles). The trail includes uphill sections and original Inca stone steps, which can be steep. We classify it as Moderate. If you have a reasonable level of fitness and can walk for 6 hours with breaks, you will do just fine!
2. Do I have to carry all my luggage?
Absolutely not. You only need to carry a daypack (20-30 liters) during the hike. This should hold your water, snacks, rain jacket, sunscreen, and camera. Your main luggage (clothing for the night/next day) will be sent ahead by train and waiting for you at the hotel in Aguas Calientes. You hike light; we handle the heavy lifting.
3. How far in advance do I need to book?
The sooner, the better! Even though this is the 2-day option, it requires the same government permits as the 4-day Classic trail. These permits are limited to 250 per day and often sell out 3 to 6 months in advance. We recommend booking as soon as you know your travel dates to avoid disappointment.
4. Do I really need my original passport?
Yes, this is non-negotiable. You must bring your original physical passport (not a copy or a photo on your phone) to enter the trail at Km 104 and to enter Machu Picchu. Important: If you renew your passport after booking with us, you must let us know immediately and bring both the old and new passports, or the rangers will not let you pass.
5. What happens if it rains?
We keep hiking! The trail is located in the Cloud Forest, so rain can happen at any time of year. It adds to the mystical atmosphere! We recommend bringing a high-quality rain poncho or waterproof jacket. The stones can get slippery, so hiking boots with good grip are essential.
6. Can I climb Huayna Picchu on this tour?
It is tricky. Because of the tight schedule on Day 2 (touring the citadel and catching the train back), fitting in the Huayna Picchu hike is difficult and often requires buying an extra permit or staying a second night in Aguas Calientes. If this is a «must-do» for you, please contact us so we can customize your itinerary!
7. Is food included on the trek?
Yes! We provide a box lunch for the hike on Day 1, and dinner is included at a restaurant in Aguas Calientes that night. Your hotel will provide breakfast on Day 2. You only need to bring extra snacks (chocolate, nuts, energy bars) and water for the hike.
8. What about altitude sickness?
It is less of a risk here, but still possible. The 2-Day trail starts at a lower elevation (2,100m) than Cusco (3,400m), so many people feel better once they start hiking! However, you should still spend at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the trek to acclimatize.
